Artwork DPI Instructions: How to Achieve High-Quality Prints

A high-quality print starts with a high-quality image. To ensure your DTF (direct-to-film) transfers are vivid, sharp, and professional, your artwork should be set to 300 DPI (dots per inch). Below, we’ll guide you through setting up your artwork for 300 DPI using common design tools.

 

What is DPI?
“DPI” stands for dots per inch—a measure of how much detail is packed into an inch of your image when printed. Higher DPI = crisper results.

 

How to Calculate 300 DPI Dimensions

To find out the pixel dimensions needed for 300 DPI, simply multiply your desired print size (in inches) by 300.

Example: For a 14” x 14” design:

  • 14" × 300 DPI = 4200 pixels
  • Final image size = 4200px × 4200px

 Pro Tip: If your design will be printed in multiple sizes, export your artwork based on the largest size. This ensures it remains sharp when scaled down.

 

Creating or Adjusting DPI in Popular Design Tools

Adobe Photoshop

 

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Image > Image Size.
  3. Check “Resample.”
  4. Set the Resolution to 300 DPI.
  5. Adjust Width and Height (in inches or pixels).
  6. Select an interpolation method (e.g., Bicubic).
  7. Click OK, then Save (PNG recommended for DTF).

 

Adobe Illustrator

  1. Open your file.
  2. Select your image or group.
  3. Go to Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings.
  4. Set Resolution to 300 DPI.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Save your file.

 

Canva

  1. Open or create your design.
  2. Set the canvas size in pixels to match your print dimensions (e.g., 4200 × 4200 px for 14”).
  3. Upload or create your artwork.
  4. When done, click Share > Download.
  5. Choose PNG for better quality.

 

Procreate

  1. Tap + to create a new canvas.
  2. Tap Custom Size and input width/height in inches or pixels.
  3. Set DPI to 300.
  4. Tap Create to begin your artwork.

 

Cricut Design Space

  1. Import high-resolution (300 DPI+) images.
  2. Avoid enlarging low-res images.
  3. For quality results, use Print Then Cut mode.
  4. Preview your project before printing or cutting.

 

Inkscape

  1. Open your design.
  2. Go to File > Export PNG Image.
  3. Set the DPI to 300 in the export dialog.
  4. Export your artwork.

 

A Few Important Notes

  • Online Downloads: If your image was sourced from the web and is low-res, common tools won’t upscale it effectively. Consider sourcing higher-resolution art.
  • Purchased Artwork: Ask your designer to re-export the file at 300 DPI if needed.
  • DIY Designs: Reopen your project in the original software and follow the instructions above to adjust the DPI.
